Speech and Debate

Young Scholars Institute provides opportunities for students to learn speaking and argumentation skills. Instructors will provide valuable feedback and advice to students so that they will be well prepared to speak publicly and confidently, to do research, and to think critically.

With the unique Nova emphasis on fun and experiential learning, the elementary school program lays the foundation to change young students lives forever and for the better.  Students develop self-confidence and focus while developing effective communication skills.  Through active speaking exercises and drills, students find their power and unique voices while learning technical mastery of speech events.  Students also develop critical thinking, argumentation and basic research and case-building skills by learning fundamentals of SPAR, Congressional debate, parliamentary debate, and Public Forum debate. The powerful ability to improvise and come up with communication on-the-spot is emphasized. Through a fun and active environment, students build the key communication skills they need to succeed in life. Tournament participation is voluntary but highly encouraged.

Middle school can be a tough time for children as they navigate the ups and downs of their age, transition into middle school and deal with other changes. 

Empowering youth with self-confidence and the power of a unique and strong voice can often be the key to a wonderful and life-changing middle school time period.

With the unique Nova emphasis on fun, self-empowerment, academic skill-building and experiential learning, the middle school program at Nova 42 remains a powerhouse, much-admired and never-duplicated. The speech and debate classes expose students to a broad training in speech events and debate events. Students actively engage and participate in public speaking drills, exercises, speeches, improvisational activities, SPAR, Congressional debate, Lincoln Douglas debate and Public Forum debate.  With our unique access to NEXIS research databases, Nova offers students research training, critical thinking, case-building and other crucial academic skills.  With over 32-35 tournaments (2 to3 in the summer) available for students, Nova also provides an experiential training ground unparalleled in the speech and debate community.  Students develop self-confidence and focus while developing effective communication skills. Through a fun and active environment, students build the key communication skills they need to succeed in life. Tournament participation is voluntary but highly encouraged.

Public Forum Debate Skills (grades 5th to 10th)

This intensive but fun 5-day camp is for the novice debater (except for Adv PF Camp). He or she will learn the fundamentals of argumentation, critical thinking and presentation.  Students will learn Public Forum debate as well as introduction to Congressional debate. A debate tournament is set up for the final day, with prizes.  Students must bring a sack lunch Monday-Thursday.  Nova 42 provides a lunch on Friday.

YSI Kids (grades 1st, 2nd and 3rd)
It's never too early to be a confident speaker!  The focus of this class is to introduce public speaking and fundamentals of speech and presentation to our youngest stars.  Filled with fun improv games, storytelling and other hands-on drills, communication basics and more, this class builds the foundation of self-confidence and a joy of public speaking at an early age!

He or she will review the fundamentals of argumentation, critical thinking and presentation.  Students will learn the strategies of Lincoln Douglas debate as well as advanced techniques such as Kritiks and Theory. A debate tournament is set up for the final day, with prizes.  Students must bring a sack lunch Monday-Thursday. Nova 42 provides a lunch on Friday.

This fun-filled workshop style 3-day camp is for the speaker interested in expanding their skills around interpretive and performance style events. He or she will review the fundamentals of voice, blocking and piece preparation.  Students will learn the basics of performance as well as advanced techniques fore national level competition. A tournament is set up for the final day, with prizes.  Students must bring a sack lunch Monday-Thursday. Nova 42 provides a hot lunch on Friday.
