The number of Advanced Placement (AP) classes you should take as a high school student aiming for admission to an Ivy League university can vary depending on several factors, including your school's offerings, your academic strengths and interests, and the rigor of your course load. While there's no specific magic number of AP classes that guarantees admission, here are some guidelines to consider:

  1. Challenge Yourself Appropriately: Ivy League admissions committees seek students who have challenged themselves academically and excelled in rigorous coursework. Take the most challenging courses available to you and excel in them, whether they're AP, International Baccalaureate (IB), honors, or dual enrollment courses.
  2. Quality Over Quantity: It's better to excel in a few AP classes than to spread yourself too thin across many. Admissions officers would rather see high grades and deep engagement in a handful of rigorous courses than mediocre performance across a wide range of classes.
  3. Consider Your Interests and Strengths: Focus on taking AP classes in subjects that align with your interests, strengths, and potential college major. If you excel in math and science, for example, consider taking AP Calculus, AP Physics, or AP Chemistry. Similarly, if you're passionate about literature and writing, AP English Language and Composition or AP Literature might be good choices.
  4. Balance Your Course Load: Don't overload yourself with AP classes at the expense of your well-being or your ability to excel in other areas, such as extracurricular activities, community service, or leadership roles. Balance is key, so consider your overall schedule and commitments when deciding how many AP classes to take.
  5. Seek Advice: Consult with your school counselor, teachers, and mentors for guidance on selecting the right number and mix of AP classes for your goals and circumstances. They can provide valuable insight based on their knowledge of your academic abilities and the expectations of Ivy League admissions.
Ultimately, the goal is not just to take a certain number of AP classes, but to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and a willingness to challenge yourself in pursuit of your educational goals. But remember, here at Young Scholars, we can help you navigate your course load to put you in the best position, whether your dream school is in the Ivy League or anywhere else.
